The Community Overdrive non profit auto partner program was created to fill the need to help others overcome the obstacle to poverty. Transportation is frequently cited as a major obstacle to overcoming poverty. Households in poverty have lower vehicle ownership rates yet still spend a higher proportion of their income on transportation. Limited vehicle availability and fewer affordable transportation options affect this cost-sensitive group. Lack of transportation strains access to jobs, goods, and services. Studies have shown ownership of a private automobile is a key element of success in individuals transitioning into the workforce.
As the wealth gap widens, it becomes increasingly evident that low income individuals need help obtaining transportation.
Community Overdrive addresses some of the challenges the less fortunate have to
purchasing automobiles. Through this unique program individuals have the opportunity to earn vouchers that can be used to subsidize their initial
car payments. The two ways to earn vouchers are by
attending volunteer events and by providing homemade
potluck dishes to our weekly community picnic. Reducing
the barrier to entry to purchasing vehicles provides those
that are struggling with poverty a way to get on the road
and gain access to critical jobs, goods, and services.
Additional benefits of the program are that it serves the
local community by supplying valuable volunteer labor to nonprofts and exceptional food to those in need. It also encourages volunteerism by providing meaningful yet manageable volunteer experiences to individuals in need.
